It has been announced that Gary Hill is to join, or already has joined, the Daggers as manager of the club. Lets hope that he can get us back into the League where we belong. Let us also hope that he can build on a squad that, at times this season, has proved that it can compete with the best. We'll see.

HARDY CALLS HALT TO MANAGERIAL CAREER

By Nicholas Harling, The Telegraph, 2 March 1999

TED HARDY is to call it a day after a lifetime in football management. He leads Dagenham and Redbridge for the last time tomorrow in the home Ryman League game against Hampton. Three months short of his 70th birthday and two days after the east London club's FA Umbro Trophy defeat at St Albans, Hardy confirmed he was to end his fourth spell with the club yesterday. "This has nothing to do with Saturday," he insisted. "It's fair I give the club time to sort out next season."

Hardy's assistant, John Bennett, will take over in a caretaker capacity, while West Ham have promised a benefit match on May 4. The oldest manager to take a team to Wembley, Hardy led Dagenham out for the FA Trophy final in 1997, which they lost to Woking.Garry Hill, the St Albans manager, is favourite to succeed him, while there are suggestions that Bob Dowie - sacked by Ryman League leaders Aylesbury on Friday - would fill the vacant slot at Clarence Park. The Aylesbury post would appeal to Paul Fairclough, still out of football following his dismissal by Stevenage. Whether Hill would want to leave with his side still in the FA Trophy is open to question.

Press Release

As you may be aware the Club have been in discussions, over a period of time, with Manager Ted Hardy. As a result of these talks it was agreed, some time ago, that Ted would stand down at the end of February to enable the Club to look for a successor. It is unfortunate that his final Trophy match did not result in the victory he so richly deserves.

Assistant Manager John Bennett has assumed a caretaker role until a decision regarding a successor has been made. As recognition of Ted’s service to the Club, and to Non-League football in general, Harry Redknapp has kindly agreed to bring his full West Ham United First Team squad to Victoria Road on Tuesday 4th May for a benefit match.

In addition, Ted will be made a Life Vice-President of Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club. One of Non-League football’s true characters Ted, aged 70, came out of retirement to answer the Daggers call in April 1996, unfortunately too late to save the club from relegation from the Conference. This was despite winning almost as many games as the Club had done since the start of that season. In his first full season the Club finished fourth in the Isthmian League Premier Division and Ted took them to Wembley in the final of the F.A. Umbro Trophy where they lost to Woking 1-0, making history as the oldest manager to lead a side out onto the hallowed turf twenty two years after his last visit with Bishop’s Stortford in 1974.

In his second season the Club again finished fourth in the League although, in the process they won the Essex Senior Cup, beating Purfleet 2-1 in the Final - their first honour since the Club came into existence in it’s present form in 1992. They also reached the second round of the F.A. Cup losing narrowly to Peterborough. Ted has had a difficult season facing long term injuries to key players. Whilst league form and some performances have been indifferent, with the side currently lying in mid-table, he has managed to steer the team into the F.A. Umbro Trophy 5th round beating Nationwide Conference sides Farnborough and Telford in the process.

Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club - List of Managers since 1st July 1992

March 1999 - John Bennett (Caretaker)
April 1996 - February 1999 Ted Hardy
November 1995 - April 1996 Graham Carr
July 1994 - November 1995 Dave Cusack
July 1992 - July 1994 John Still

13th February 1999

Paul Gothard has be called up for the England Semi-Professional squad who play Italy on 2nd March(?) at Hayes. He is the only player in the squad to be chosen from a team that plays outside the Conference.

24 December 1998

Simon Miller, who left the in October but was unable to find another club, is again training with the club.

Danny Shipp is struggling to make the line up for the home match v Purfleet on the 28th due to an injury. As Darren Barry is away in Ireland, Simon Miller could be drafted straight in .

Also returning to to the Daggers for his third spell is Warren Oakley.

28 November 1998

Both Matty Bird and Mitchell Springett have been put onto the transfer list. I'm not sure whose decision this. Gary Blackford will apparently be out for six weeks with a problem. Blimey, I should be a serious reporter with facts like that.

16 November 1998

Tim Cole and Steve Conner have resumed training. Hopefully after this weekend we should have a full squad to choose from.

12 November 1998

We have drawn Chesham United in the next round of the Puma (Full Members Cup) following there 4-1 victory over Barton Rovers. We recieved a bye in the first round.

When we play Hendon in the Ryman Premier on Tuesday 17th Nov it will be 100th game in the Isthmian League:

Record so far:

Played Won Drawn Lost Goals F Goals A Points
98 46 24 28 164 114 162

2nd November 1998

Stevenage game off again, will now be played on Wednesday 4th November at 7.45pm

Tim Cole could be fit within 10 days, I'm not sure if this means fit to train or fit to play but either way it's good news.

On a sad note John Stimson, the hero from the semi-final of the FA Trophy and FA Cup in 1997 is hanging up his boots after deciding he cannot play for Fords because of an on going injury.

28th October 1998

Lee Matthews should be back after a couple of hernia operations. He has just started back in the reserves and last night was an unused substitute in our 1-1 draw with Wealdstone. The replay is on Monday unless we draw with Stevenage on Saturday.

The Ware game has to rearranged again.

27th October 1998

FA Trophy draw, We are at home to Barton Rovers if we beat Wealdstone.

Tim Cole, injured in our 3-3 draw against Bromley last Monday is out for three weeks. This is before he can resume training.

Our leaugue cup game at Ware is now due next Tuesday (3rd November), but I've no doubt this will change again.

DAGENHAM RESENT EARLY TROPHY DATE

By Nicholas Harling, from The Telegraph

Conference clubs complained loud and long when forced to enter the FA Cup at last week's Third Qualifying Round stage. This week it is the turn of Dagenham & Redbridge, FA Trophy Finalists the season before last, and Gloucester, the team they beat in the Semi-Finals, to wonder what they have done to deserve a place in tomorrow's Trophy First Round programme. Among the 58 clubs given byes to the Second Round are several with little or no cup pedigree. "How come we're in now and not Romford?" is the question being asked by most Dagenham supporters. "You'd have thought Premier Division clubs could have come in a bit later," said David Andrews, the Dagenham chairman. "Why we have to battle through from this early, I don't know. You could say that I am upset about it, but not rate." Dagenham are fifth in the Ryman League, Premier Division, after recovering from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Bromley on Monday. They did so with the help of a goal from Paul Cobb, his ninth in as many games, a club record. He also missed a penalty. So Cobb is the man tomorrow's visitors Wealdstone will respect most.

Wealdstone are a little lower down the Ryman First Division than Chertsey, who are Gloucester's hosts. Like Dagenham, Gloucester are baffled as to why provision could not be made for them to enter later. "I'm a little bit disappointed. I thought we deserved better," said Leroy Rosenior, their manager. Whatever anger there was left simmering within Rosenior has probably mellowed following last week's 10-0 drubbing of Sudbury in the FA Cup. "I'm not a person who moans a lot," he said, "although some referees might disagree with that." Rosenior is realistic enough to expect no repeat of Saturday's attacking bonanza from his Dr Martens Premier League pacesetters. "Chertsey will be very motivated. They are very well organised," he said.

EIGHT DAYS OF RECKONING FOR DAGENHAM

The Independent

Two Clubs with a distinguished history in the competition meet tomorrow in the First Round of the FA Umbro Trophy. Dagenham & Redbridge take on Wealdstone at Victoria Road in the first of two crucial cup ties in eight days for the east London club, while the following Saturday they entertain Stevenage Borough in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. The Daggers, who are sixth in the Ryman League Premier Division, were beaten by Woking in the 1997 Trophy Final, while their predecessors, Dagenham FC, won the tournament in 1980 and were the losing Finalists in 1977. The Stones, now in the Ryman First Division, won the Conference and Trophy double in 1985.

Wealdstone, who have risen from the Ryman Third Division while sharing Edgware's ground, at last have realistic hopes of moving home to the borough of Harrow, from which they have been absent for seven years. The club have received permission from the local council to build a new stadium at Prince Edward playing fields, Canons Park.

20th October 1998

At the Bromley game last night Tim Cole strained the ligaments in his ankle. He will report to Steve Gracie on Thursday to see how it is. If I get any news will let you know. He has been a valuable asset to the club this season, we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Prices for our FA Cup match v Stevenage are £8 for seats, £7 terrace, £4 concessions.

23 September 1998

Well, I have some news. Tim Cole, who joined the club in 1997, has signed an extension to his contract that will keep him with the club until 2001. This, in my opinion is great news. Especially as Paul Cobb has also signed an extension keeping him with us until May 2000

Lets hope they are actual contracts and not worthless bits of paper that appears to be the case in the Premier League!

John Stimson has gone to Ford United, I am not sure if this is on loan or permanent. Either way good luck to him. Darren Williams has also left the club

We have our first cup match of any substance on 3rd October. FA Cup 2nd Qualifier against Eastbourne Town. This match is at home
